Hi friends!
I wanted to share something that I noticed while I was walking around Marshalls. Why are we putting strawberries and cherries on every box, bag, or container we can get our hands on?? Now, don’t get me wrong, I will be the first to purchase anything that has strawberries or cherries on it. What I don’t understand is when companies put the strawberries or cherries on the packaging, and not on the actual item! I’m talking about tupperware, picture frames, blankets, notebooks, trinkets, anything!
From a marketing side of things, it’s incredibly smart. Putting trendy symbols on the packaging of a product that you already sell? Genius. Why? Because the consumer will want to take part in the trend, but maybe will not realize that the trend will come off when they unpack their product.
I see this especially around the holidays. Putting pumpkins, leaves, or candy canes on items that are still sold year-round puts pressure on consumers to purchase now, or they might lose out on their chance at that product. You’ll find this a lot with “limited-edition” items as well.
I think that part of this has to do with the “unboxing” culture or the obsession with “hauls” that you can find on social media. Utilizing packaging that is visually appealing, trendy, and interactive is the key to getting more traction on social platforms. This era where influencers and content creators are doing brand deals in exchange for unboxing or haul videos, is a great opportunity for creating a network between the creator and the brand, the creator and the audience, and the brand and the audience.
